Practical Training

Kottakkal_Ayurveda_CollegeKottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala has a policy to provide practical training to Ayurvedic doctors for one month.

The trainees can accompany the Duty Doctors on their daily rounds to the admitted patients, be part of the patient treatment and see first hand the method of treatment. This policy was instituted to give exposure to Ayurvedic Doctors in authentic Kerala Ayurveda treatments as practiced in Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala.
There is no charge for this service by Arya Vaidya Sala. Generally, recent graduates from Ayurvedic Colleges in India (mostly South India) come to Kottakkal town and find accommodation on their own near the institution, arrange for their own food and other requirements. This is not a structured program, but an ad-hoc but formal assistance to the new doctors in their development of awareness, knowledge and practical experience.
As for western Ayurveda practitioners, as there are generally no certified BAMS degree courses that they have attended previously, this policy has not been applicable to them until now. On our request, Arya Vaidya Sala is ready to consider medical Doctors, Heil Praktikers and similar graduates with medical background and substantial formal knowledge of Ayurveda to take part in this one month practical training. Trainees should be knowledgeable enough to not ask basic medical or Ayurvedic questions and competent enough to gain from his/her experience at Kottakkal to enhance their Ayurvedic practice on returning home. Western applicants  may be judged on a case-to-case basis.

Interested Doctors/Praktikers/similar graduates may write, by post, to Arya Vaidya Sala with their graduationKottakkal Ayurveda College front photo certificates, curriculum of completed Ayurvedic courses expressing interest in attending this program. They will receive a letter of confirmation from Arya Vaidya Sala when there is space available to accommodate trainees for one month. If selected for training, trainees will have to arrange their own lodging, food, and other related needs. Arya Vaidya Sala cannot arrange for lodging, food, transport etc.  At the successful completion of the training, the trainee will receive a certificate detailing the successful completion and the duration of the practical training undertaken.

In our experience, 2-4 weeks is too short a period for 1-2 western doctors to attend individually, as the college or the AVS hospital is not equipped to host them. The usual trainees are 99% Indian BAMS students (mostly South Indian). They are acclimated to the environment–food, weather, language, accommodation, transportation, and other travel related aspects. Also, interacting with Arya Vaidya Sala doctors is easier for them. Foreigners generally find that it takes some local-focused assistance and 1-2 weeks or longer to adjust to the Indian environment. It may be difficult to get the best training from the limited free time generally available with Medical Doctors, Heil Praktikers etc. AVS currently does not have the mobility and time of a much smaller individual setup to personally take care of these students.

Recognizing this practical difficulty for individuals who wish to undergo this important practical training at Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, we are stepping in to facilitate. We will be organizing a yearly group to attend this practical training.

The services we will provide:

1. The group will be accompanied by a facilitator. We will try to appoint someone who can interpret, but it may not be possible every time.

2. We would organize a travel agency to take care of the travel needs of all trainees

3. One of our executives in Kottakkal (not an employee of Arya Vaidya Sala) will arrange for all the sundry aspects of the accommodation, non-spicy food, clothes washing and other related needs for the duration of the training.

The cost of the travel agency, travel, lodging, food etc. will be borne by the trainees and directly paid to the respective providers. We can be a facilitator only. For this facilitation/coordination, we would be charging a nominal fee to cover the cost of the facilitators.

Apart from the main reason that this facilitation will promote the propagation of authentic Ayurveda, we also see that more well trained practitioners would naturally and hopefully be choosing Kottakkal Ayra Vaidya Sala’s Supplements and Massage Oils for their Ayurvedic practice once back in their countries, though that is not a condition for taking part in this training group to Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala. We hope that all can benefit from this service.

We will be announcing more on this subject later. For now, if any of you would like to attend this practical training at Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, you may complete and submit the form below.
